A Difference of Skin

A Difference of Skin, 2013

Roseland Silos, north side of Sebastopol Road, near the intersection with Boyd Street, just east of Dutton Avenue, Santa Rosa

In 2013, artist Erik Burke was invited from Reno, Nevada to paint this huge, vertical mural on a grain silo in Santa Rosa. The inventive mural shows the spineless cactus developed by Luther Burbank, intertwined with a delicate latex party balloon. Placing these two together, Burke creates a hopeful image about the possibility of living in harmony in a diverse population. Burke was one of the first well-known mural artists from outside Sonoma County to create work here; his mural was partially funded by ArtStart, with the remainder of the funds coming through private donations arranged by local art advocates Spring Maxfield and Judy Kennedy.
